Things you should have/buy before bringing home your kitten
- Food ( It would be great if at first, you would feed him the same food he was fed while at the cattery )
- Bowls for food and water
- Cushion mat ( It would be great if you would bring a piece of fur or material that has the smell of its mother, brothers or sisters and put it in the kittens sleeping area because he would feel safer )
- Litter box ( The best would be if it is the one he or she is accustomed to, but they usually get used to new boxes quickly )
- Litter ( You can ask your breeder to give you litter that was used before )
- Comb
- Nail scissors
- Scratching post
- Toys
- Transportation box ( It will be needed not only for the trip home, but also for trips to the vet or anywhere else )
Safe kitten, Safe things
Before bringing home your kitten look closely if your home is safe for your new curious pet or if he won't cause any damage while playing:
- Is there enough space for him to run around and play?
- Are there any places he could get stuck in?
- Is there a possibility of him getting into the balcony and falling out?
- Will the kitten be able to reach of any poisonous plants?
- Are there any valuables he could break or damage?
- Are any open wires?
- Are there any unstable objects he could knock over?
How to act when the new pet arrives?
- Firstly, the kids will need to be prepared for the new pet. They need to know that the new kitten is not a toy, you can't pull him around, harm or cause any pain. He is a living being with the right to get some peace and rest.
- When the kitten arrives don't be in a hurry to pet him. Give him some space to get used to the new home and to find a safe space.
- Show him where his litter box is a couple of times.
- If there are any other animals, especially any older animals - think about how you are going to introduce them.
